Renewal of Student Visa

Renewing Your Student Visa (Titre de Séjour – Étudiant)

1. Renewal Eligibility

You must:

  • Be enrolled and continuing your studies in a French higher education institution.

  • Demonstrate sufficient resources (typically ≥ 615 €/month).

2. Documents for Renewal

  • School enrollment certificate.

  • Academic transcripts/results.

  • Passport copies (all stamped pages).

  • Student ID photocopy.

  • Passport-size photo.

  • Proof of residence in France (less than 6 months).

  • Financial proof (bank statements, sponsor documents).

❗ Additional documents might be requested by prefecture authorities.

3. Process

  • Apply online via ANEF (4 months to 2 months before expiration).

  • You receive a récépissé (temporary receipt) valid 3 months while waiting.

  • Once ready, collect your renewed student carte de séjour.

4. Key Terms

Confirmation de dépôt

  • This is an official confirmation that your visa renewal application has been successfully submitted.

  • Often received via email or through your ANEF account.

  • Keep this document as proof of your application in case of delays.

API (Attestation Prolongation d'instruction) – What It Is

1. Definition:

      • Proof that your student visa renewal application has been submitted.

      • Confirms you are legally in France, but primarily as a receipt of your application.

      • Subject to approval/acceptance by the relevant préfecture
      • Same value like a récépissé but not like an APS

2. How it differs from a récépissé:

      • Usually does not grant work rights (depends on prefecture).

3. Travel implications:

      • Like the attestation, API generally does NOT allow you to leave France safely and re-enter.

      • For travel abroad while waiting, you may need a visa de retour issued by the prefecture.

4. Duration:

    • Typically 3 months, may vary slightly by prefecture.

    • Before your Attstation Prolongation d'instruction expires, you must request for it to  renewed. The method of renewal depends on the préfecture.
    • Exact duration can vary by prefecture.

📌 Delays can happen; always apply early and check your prefecture’s instructions. (Student experiences show delays sometimes affect practical matters like internships.)

Traveling with an Attestation Provisoire / Récépissé (Prolongation d’Instruction)
1. What it is: The attestation de prolongation d’instruction is a temporary document that proves your student visa renewal application is in process. It allows you to legally stay in France while waiting for your renewed carte de séjour. 2. Traveling abroad: Technically, the récépissé or attestation is not a full travel visa. Many countries, including your home country and Schengen countries, may not accept it for re-entry into France. If you leave France, there is a risk you won’t be allowed back, even if your renewal is in process. 3. Recommended action: Avoid traveling abroad until you have your renewed student visa/card. If travel is unavoidable, contact your local prefecture and/or the French consulate in your home country before leaving. Some prefectures can issue a special return visa (“visa de retour”) for students who must travel while their renewal is ongoing.
