Updated October 2026
You have a connecting flight in a French airport, on your way to a country outside the Schengen area? Depending on your nationality, you may need an airport transit visa (ATV). It lets you wait in the international zone of the airport, without entering France. Here are the rules in force in 2026, explained simply.
In short
- The ATV lets you wait in the international zone. It does not let you enter France.
- Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal and other Asian countries need it.
- Since 10 April 2026, Indian nationals no longer need it.
- A valid visa or residence permit from the EU, the US, Canada or Japan usually exempts you.

- French overseas territories: to leave the international zone, you need a visa for that territory.
