EES AND ETIAS: WHAT CHANGES AT THE BORDER

Since April 2026, your face and fingerprints are recorded at the Schengen border. ETIAS comes next for visa-free travellers. Here is what concerns you, explained simply.

Updated October 2026

Two new European systems change how non-EU travellers cross the Schengen border. The Entry/Exit System (EES) has been fully in place since 10 April 2026. The travel authorisation ETIAS is planned for the last quarter of 2026. Here is what changes for you, explained simply.

In short

  • EES: since 10 April 2026, your face and fingerprints are recorded at the border.
  • ETIAS: planned for late 2026, only for visa-free travellers.
  • If you need a visa (India, Sri Lanka, China…), you do not need ETIAS.
  • If you live in France with a residence permit, neither system concerns you.

EES: the Entry/Exit System

  • Who: non-EU nationals coming for a short stay (up to 90 days in any 180-day period), with or without a visa.
  • What is recorded: your passport data, your face and your fingerprints (no fingerprints for children under 12), and the date and place of each entry and exit.
  • What changes: it replaces passport stamps and records the length of your stay.
  • Not concerned: EU citizens, and holders of a long-stay visa or a residence permit.

Your first crossing can take longer: arrive early at the airport.

10 April 2026since this date, the EES works in all Schengen countries
€20ETIAS fee, free under 18 and over 70
3 yearsETIAS validity, or until your passport expires

ETIAS: the travel authorisation

  • Who: only nationals of countries that do not need a visa for the Schengen area, for example Japan, South Korea, Singapore or Malaysia.
  • When: the EU plans it for the last quarter of 2026. The exact date will be announced officially.
  • How: online, on the official ETIAS website or mobile app only.
  • Cost and validity: €20, free under 18 and over 70, valid for 3 years or until your passport expires.
  • Not concerned: travellers who need a visa, such as nationals of India, Sri Lanka, China, Bangladesh, Pakistan or Nepal, and holders of a residence permit.

Beware of fake websites: apply for ETIAS only on the official EU website or app. Unofficial websites charge extra fees and can misuse your data.

What this means for you

  • You need a visa: nothing changes for your visa application, but your face and fingerprints are recorded when you cross the border. See our visa for France service.
  • You are visa-free: from the launch of ETIAS, apply online before your trip.
  • You live in France: travel with your valid residence permit and your passport.
  • Everyone: respect the 90-day limit. With the EES, every day is counted automatically.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Questions & Answers

I am Indian. Do I need ETIAS?
No. Indian nationals need a Schengen visa, so they do not need ETIAS. When you cross the border, your face and fingerprints are recorded in the EES.
I live in France with a residence permit. Do EES and ETIAS concern me?
No. Holders of a residence permit or a long-stay visa are not registered in the EES and do not need ETIAS. Always travel with your valid residence permit and your passport.
When does ETIAS start?
The European Union plans it for the last quarter of 2026. The exact date will be announced officially. Until then, visa-free travellers do not need it.
How much does ETIAS cost?
€20, and it is free for travellers under 18 and over 70. It is valid for 3 years, or until your passport expires. Apply only on the official EU website or app.
