Family Reunification

Family Reunification

REUNITE WITH YOUR FAMILY!

Bring your spouse and children to France through family reunification. We check your resources and housing and prepare your file, in your language.

Updated October 2026

You live legally in France and you want your spouse and children to join you? Family reunification (regroupement familial) is the procedure for that. The OFII examines your file and the prefect decides. Here are the conditions in force in 2026, explained simply.

In short

  • At least 18 months of legal stay in France, with a permit of 1 year or more.
  • For your spouse (18 or older) and your children under 18.
  • Stable resources from €1,867.02 a month, and a home big enough.
  • The prefect decides within 6 months: no answer means refusal.

Who can apply, and for whom

  • You: a non-EU national living legally in France for at least 18 months, with a residence permit valid for at least 1 year, or a renewal receipt. For Algerian nationals, the period is 12 months.
  • Your spouse: at least 18 years old and legally married to you.
  • Your children: under 18 on the day you apply. Children of a previous union, adopted children or children under kafala can also come, under conditions.
  • Not concerned: parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters.
  • The whole family: as a rule, all the family must come together. Partial reunification is accepted only in exceptional cases, in the children's interest.

Refugees and people with international protection use a different procedure (réunification familiale). Talent Passport holders use the simplified "accompanying family" procedure: see our Talent Passport service.

Your resources

Your stable resources are calculated over the 12 months before your application, as an average gross amount per month:

€1,867.02per month for a family of 2 or 3 people
€2,053.72per month for a family of 4 or 5 people
€2,240.42per month for a family of 6 people or more

Family benefits and some social allowances do not count. There is no resource condition if you receive the disability allowances AAH or ASI.

Your housing

When your family arrives, you must have a home that is decent and big enough. Minimum living area for 2 people:

  • Zones A bis and A (Paris, its region and some large cities): 22 m²
  • Zones B1 and B2: 24 m²
  • Zone C: 28 m²
  • Each extra person: add 10 m² up to 8 people, then 5 m² per person

The procedure step by step

  • Application: online on the OFII online service, or by registered letter to the OFII. Use only one of the two.
  • OFII: it checks your file and gives you a filing certificate when it is complete.
  • Mayor: your town hall checks your resources and your housing, within 2 months.
  • Prefect: the decision comes within 6 months after the complete file. No answer after 6 months counts as a refusal, which you can challenge.
  • Visa: if accepted, your family applies for a visa at the French consulate. Your spouse validates the long-stay visa online within 3 months of arrival, then receives a residence permit vie privée et familiale.
  • Integration: your spouse, and your children over 16, sign the republican integration contract (CIR) with the OFII.

Be careful: bringing your family to France outside this procedure can lead to the withdrawal of your own residence permit. Always use the official procedure.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Questions & Answers

How long must I live in France before applying?
At least 18 months of legal stay, with a residence permit valid for at least 1 year, or a renewal receipt, when you apply. For Algerian nationals, the period is 12 months.
How much money do I need for family reunification?
Stable resources over the 12 months before your application, of at least €1,867.02 gross per month for 2 or 3 people, €2,053.72 for 4 or 5 people, and €2,240.42 for 6 or more. Family benefits do not count.
Can I bring my parents with family reunification?
No. Family reunification only concerns your spouse and your children under 18. Parents, brothers and sisters are not concerned. Other residence permits may exist in specific situations: contact us to check your case.
How long does the procedure take?
The prefect must decide within 6 months after the OFII receives your complete file. If there is no answer after 6 months, it counts as a refusal, which you can challenge. Then your family still needs to apply for a visa at the consulate.
My family is already in France. Can they benefit?
In general, no: your family must live abroad when you apply. Reunification on the spot is only possible in limited cases. Bringing your family outside the procedure can lead to the withdrawal of your own residence permit.
I am a refugee. Is it the same procedure?
No. Refugees and people with subsidiary protection use a different procedure, called réunification familiale, without the resource and housing conditions. Contact us to prepare it.
