PROOF OF FUNDS FOR YOUR STAY IN FRANCE

Since 1 August 2026, students must show €877.50 per month. We help you choose the right proof and check your bank documents before you apply, in your language.

To get or renew many visas and residence permits, you must prove that you have enough money to live in France. For students, the amount increased on 1 August 2026. Here is how much you need and which documents are accepted, explained simply.

In short

  • Students: at least €877.50 per month since 1 August 2026.
  • That is €10,530 for a full year (it was €615 per month before).
  • Accepted proof: bank statements, sponsor, loan or scholarship.
  • Never use fake bank documents: it is a crime.

How much money students need

Since 1 August 2026, foreign students must show resources of at least €877.50 per month. The rule applies to visa and residence permit applications filed since this date. For a renewal, the prefecture assesses your resources according to your situation.

There is no resource check if you were admitted after the entrance exam of a higher education school that has signed an agreement with the State.

The documents accepted

  • Your own money: a bank certificate or bank statements in your name.
  • Family support: a sponsor's commitment (attestation de prise en charge) with the sponsor's ID and bank statements, or money transferred to your own account.
  • A student loan: a bank certificate showing the amount of the loan granted.
  • A scholarship: a certificate from the scholarship provider showing the amount and the duration.

Large deposits made just before your application can raise questions. Keep a clear history of where the money comes from.

Once you are in France

  • For your renewal, show the statements of your French bank account over the last months
  • If your family sends you money regularly, show the transfers
  • Documents in a foreign language usually need a French translation by a sworn translator

Resources for other residence permits

  • Family reunification: from €1,867.02 gross per month for a family of 2 or 3 people. See our family reunification service.

Be careful: never use fake bank statements or certificates. False documents are a crime in France, punishable by up to 3 years in prison and a €45,000 fine, and they lead to a refusal and often an order to leave France.
